New to this sight so hello out there.  I have a 97 Maxima SE with 120k
miles.  Recently it has been having a hard time starting in the morning.
It cranks over but does not want to fire right away.  Finally it will fire
over and run a bit rough for a few seconds then it runs just fine.  I
recently had a new starter and battery put in but the problem continues.
Ive heard it may be the timing chain has jumped but I have a hard time
buying that one.  Any help would be greatly appreaciated.

Try cleaning the air intake port.  Does the accelerator pedal stick the
first time you move it when the car is first started in the morning?

If the timing chain jumped, it would be running crappy all the time, not
just when first started.

At 120k miles, its also due for new plugs (for the second time).

No the accelerator seems fine.  I will try out the intake port and see if
that does it and I just picked up some new plugs and wires.  Good news
about the timing chain, thanks for info I really appreciate it.

Nissan recommends NOT using carb cleaner on the intake of the Maxima,
because it has a special anti-stick coating.  So I would avoid doing that
unless it got actually got dirty from neglected air filter or something.

The 97 Maxima has the coils on the spark plugs, so spark plug wires are a
non-issue (I imagine they are copper wires).  Platinum spark plug
replacement interval is 60,000 miles.

The problem with the TB butterfly valve is that the inside (facing the
intake manifold) will get very dirty in just a few years.  It will get
coated with a greasy sooty black film as will the inside of the intake
manifold.  Don't forget that the PCV valve sucks crankcase oil vapors
into the manifold.  I don't see how you can wipe the TB clean
effectively without carb/induction system cleaner.  AFter a good
throrough TB clean, my cold weather startup difficulties were cured.
I plan on cleaning the TB every 2 years.
