My son has a 1991 300ZX.  As of yesterday, when he shifts to 3rd or 4th, it
appears he is in neutral.  There is no grinding or noise or feeling of being
in a gear at all.   It feels like it shifted normally.  There were no
problems with the transmission leading up to this.   1st, 2nd, and 5th are
still fine.  Can someone tell me what this may be.  (and how expensive to
fix) Thanks.

I had the same thing happen.  One of my shift "rods" has popped out.  Sorry
if I don't know the technical term, but it's the metal rod that connects the
shifter to the tranny.  Anyways, it didn't cost much.  Probably $50 for the
part and then of course $75 for labor.
