Hi, just bought a 1985 auto ZX(non-turbo). I can see getting a reader and code book is important unless you want to go to poor house. My car started cutting out at around 2000 RPM or more(at least this) and I read of another, same year having this prob. Haven't analized much as just happy to get home. I will change air and gas filter etc, but it's probably not that, 'cause that wouldn't cause it at an exact rpm range? Anyhow, where's the cheapest reader, where does it plug in and where's the code book? I went to a site mentioned in archives but it wasn't active. You'd think this was a common signal(cutout 2k) but after searching and reading posts, I guess it could be anything.
Thanks, John in Ca.

On those cars the codes are useless, they didn't have their act together at
that point and the codes will many times send you on a wild goose chase.

It's a dead Air flow/ Air mass sensor, whatever you choose to call it. A
company called Python makes a reman that works pretty good. Check the AIV
valve, it's probably leaking exhaust and sooting up the meter ruining it.

Well I found the computer box on passenger side(have codes), but are they actually useless? Also how exactly does the electrical connector come off on air flow meter? There's 2 stages of connector, one at body and one behind. I see possible small clips. I don't want to break this thing. Since you guys are so good, one more thing. I have to wait to warm before driving. Even if the engine temp is fine, if I leave and come back to car, I need to warm up(but not 5 or 10 minutes). I was told it's the fast idle control device ect. What exactly might this be.
Thanks, John

"Check the AIV

Found info on Air injection valve in Haynes but not its location. Sounds like this should be replaced.

Me again. This occurs in all gears at 2.2k-2.3k rpm and runs fine below this. This must be a dead giveaway. I don't think a fuel filter or air filter would have anything to do with this?

Check your MAF/MAS.

I've checked and can't find this, what is MAF/MAS please?

Other names for an AF meter.

Hey Steve ,I really appreciate you helping me a "noobie". I now know more than my mechanic about these cars thanks to you and studying Haynes. I see how to get connector off.

Man Steve, I don't know how to thank you for pointing in right direction. This computer stuff scares me. If you need any music software, let me know. My mechanic was not in(I thought maybe he was a no go on computer stuff) but the guy I talked to said they have a reader next door that they use. This is good sign. Dealer said $120 to analize.
Anyhow, I'll do a search on the stuff you mentioned.
Thanks again, John in Ca.

You know your local Auto ZONE store would do this code reading for free?

They said they don't do this in Ca. I've got computer located, just have to figure how to take out and find accurate instructions how to use it. I've got the codes but Haynes is confusing on how to use. Thanks

Choose Nissan:
put a zero before the code, like 0175.

Hey, that's pretty cool except I have a self contained computer. (1985) Thanks anyway

FYI, http://www.z31.com is a fantastic source for tech info, as is
http://www.zcar.com and http://www.zcarparts.com/ .
There should be a way to get error codes without plugging in. On my 82 ZX,
there is a light on the computer control box (under the passemger seat) that
flashes codes in sequence. Hope something here helps somehow.
Good luck,
WT

I now know where mine is. It's passenger side on right wall where feet go. Yes, it has 20 codes. I'm going to check it out tomorrow.

Waste of time, but you've already been warned.
