Maybe it's just bad timing and nothing to do with your repairs. I have an
87. Your radio problem is more common than you think. Mine did the same
thing. Others in the group had similar problems. (steering wheel controls
not working.)
If you can hear the motor for the antenna that means your radio is trying to
turn on. I had to replace the antenna itself. They are just a plastic
toothed strip that runs up inside. The plastic strips or breaks. I tried to
bond it back. It worked for about a week. You have to replace the whole
unit. (meaning the antenna tower and strip) You do not have to take out the
motor. You can replace the antenna from outside the car.
When the radio goes dead after hitting the steering wheel button, I have
found that inserting a cassette and then rejecting it will turn the radio
back on. It's worth a try!
