My 280ZX ( '83 Auto, 70,000kms ) recently started pinging...or actually
started pinging louder and more noticeable...I was advised to switch to
"Premium" type ( high octane ) unleaded fuel, as well has run an aditive
"Flashlube" to remedy this..

I did ( using Shell "optimax", and the "Flashlube") ...and straight away i
noticed the pinging stopped, and also ( though the cost of fuel is slight
more expensive ) getting way better mileage....making well worth the
switch...

BUT.... I have just refilled the tank again with the same type of high
octane fuel...though actually another brand ( BP "premium"  ), but strangely
enough...the pinging has returned !

Anyone know what could have caused this, or what i should do to remedy it
???

cheers,
Brian C

Have you checked the timing? These engines had such low compression stock,
hard to image one of them pinging unless they have MASSIVE carbon buildup.
Might try "seafoam" or one of those other carbod deposit removers if the
timing is set right.

I will get my mechanic to check timing at next service...I think the stuff I
used ( "Flashlube" ) is a carbon deposit remover...so have already added
that to fuel a few times..

Have since found out that the last tank of fuel ( BP Premium ) is only 95
octane...so maybe that's why it's pinging again...since the first time I
used Shell "optimax" ( 98 octane )... will see the refill i guess...
