Okay men & or women, I need help with my 280, 1977, 5 speed, I am tired of
being ripped off so I have decided to finish this project myself. omg.
what I have done so far, fuel injector boots, points and plugs replaced,
valve cover gasket, had the fuel lines cleaned, alt replaced, water
pump, thermostate and radiator replaced oh and on my second fuel pump
because the mechanic just slapped a new one on with out blowing out the
lines, another mechanic rebuilt the orginal one and it went bad. so I went
out and bought another and don't know what way to put it in & the book is
not very clear and it fits both ways, and won't start either way, what
else is wrong, gas smell so bad that we had to bring a change of clothes,
my fuel gauge does not work, I think that could be just a matter of
replacing the thing in the tank? yes I am seriouse, just need a little
guidance, it was running good and strong until the fuel pump gave out. I
have been told the smell is the head gasket, and I need to have it
replaced would this be true? and which way is the right way with the fuel
pump?

This car doesn't have points..

That isn't goint to ruin a pump.

Then it's the wrong pump, The right pump has two different size fittings so
you CAN'T install it backwards.

$20 says the pump isn't the problem, I bet the gas tank is full of
rust/crap. VERY comon problem with these cars after they sit up. how many
fuel pumps are you going to put on this same car?
