Electrical problem?

Here’s the back ground to my problem. I purchased a 1985 300ZX in
great condition in 1986 from a friend.  Every fall I stored it and
removed the battery and placed it in my cellar on a wooden board.
Every spring I hooked up the battery and off I went never having
a problem.  This spring I hooked up the battery and nothing happen so
I charged up the battery and finally got it started but none of my
gages worked including the tachometer. I drove it up and down my
street and they would work occasionally. I had the battery test
and it is in good condition.  I’m not sure if this is associated with
the problem but the woman’s voice who tells your “your fuel level is
low or the doors are opened” worked occasionally since I purchased the
car.  Consumer Reports (when they listed the car) always had a poor
dot in the electrical system.

I’m sure that there are a number of things that could cause this but
I’m wondering if it’s the alternator is gone or a short in the wiring?
Someone indicated that it could be a fuse link. Any one care to
suggest what’s could be the problem.

I appreciate your help.

I am not the expert on this but I will try to help as I am new to Nissan as
well.
1/ Measure the voltage across the batt terminal with engine off.  Record the
voltage.
2/ You can measure the voltage across the batt terminal while the engine is
running.  If you have something like 13.5- 14 volts.
3/ If there is an increase in voltage while the engine is running, you
alternator is still okay that means no short and all electrical wires
relating to the charging system is okay.

I have read and spoken to other who has reported the problem as well
described here.  They often said it is relate to the charging system or
power supply for digital dash.  So make sure focus in this area first.

Coincident but I am having an alternator problem as well. I don't have
digital dash so I can't share my experience with you.

Paul  Thanks for responding. I will try what you have suggested. Even
though the car does not have a digital dash I'm sure they both wired
the same way. I would like to read your experience since we both have
non digital dashes.  If I get any information on this I will forward
it to you. I hope you will do like wise.

Not a problem,
I have confirmed that my alternator is bad.  The two brushes are well worn
out that is no longer making contact to my rotor.  I have tested and
confirmed that my stator and rotor isolation to ground are still good. I
have two options.
1/ to buy another alternator and discard the old one.  Cost is an issue.
2/ Replace the two brushes then have the alternator bench test or install in
teh car and test.

Remove the alternator is not a bad job.  If you are organize and have few
simples tools, you can remove it within 1 hr max.

What's the one thing all your gages have in common?  They're grounded
,,,right? Is it probable that all your gages hot signals are bad at once? Or
could you have a bad ground connection?

Just a thought......

Randy,
'87 non turbo auto w/digital dash

I have repaired my alternator.  Had to replace the two brushes, a bit of
cleaning and it is as good as new.  The brushes part number is DA60 or DA45.
DA60 is the right one (according to alternator repair shop.  DA45 is
slightly larger but can be filed down.  These two brushes will cost you
about 5 dollars.  If someone needs instruction as how to test or to replace
the brushes, let me know.
