I'm curious, with high gas prices for premium unleaded, what would lower
octane gas do a Z32 engine. I have a 94 coupe with a stock engine. So I
was thinking about it after a friend (male) suggested it could do no harm
using
89 octane. He's GQ but not a GQMonkey or mechanic.
Also, I should point out this guy has a Triple A card and would use it to
let someone else change his tire. I have a small floor jack and strong
biceps/triceps and don't mind getting my hands dirty.
All input will be appreciated!

It will cause detonation and eventually cause your engine to go *boom*. Don't be tempted.
Nissan doesn't just recommend high octane fuel for the Z32, they require it. It is a high
compression engine. Your friend doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to the
Z32. Some manufacturers recommend high octane fuel when in all actuality 89 octane would
suffice, but the VG30DE does not fall into that category.

The compression ratio of the NA Z32 is 10.5 to 1. Buy the best gas you can
afford. I would run Cam2 if I could find it. I had ran 93 octane from Mobil
for many years until they switched their gas to a lower octane while
continuing to advertise 93. I had pinging, rough idle and hesitation at
moderate speeds. I concluded that Mobil was not placing 93 octane fuel in
their 93 tanks. At best it is 89. I switched to Sunoco 94 and the instant
that I turned-over the engine I could feel the difference. Night and Day.
Only someone who knows engines and Z32's could tell. Once on the road the
difference was astounding, low octane fuel limits the ignition curve, with
94 octane that car ran like I stole it. It was scary fast, since I was use
to the way it ran with Mobil, I had to readjust how much I depressed the
accelerator.
Sunoco does not sell 94 in my area any longer but their 93 still runs o.k.
I miss the 94 at any price.

Break piston rings and beat the rod bearings out of it. If you want to use
regular cheapo gas, don't buy a sports car.

He's an idiot.

Steve,
Your right, any man who would not change a tire
cannot be counted on when it comes to car advice.
I buy 92 or better octane, occasionally I can find
94 octane. Regardless, I'm not going to experiment
just to save a few pennies per gallon.
Thanks to Steve, Big G, Me

I own a 94 z32 as well. The spec on the car, from the maintenance
manual, is 91octane. When gas prices get to high I'll mix 1/2 tank or
less of 89 octane to the 93 I normally use, to get a blended 91
octane.
I personally wouldn't run on 89 octane only.

Brian,
Any issues with mixing gas like misfires,
fouled plugs, minor detonation issues, etc...
never thought about mixing gas, but some feedback from the group would be
useful, especially from mechanics.
I wonder if you used octane booster with
89 octane, would that be enough.
Thanks.

Mixing is fine and MUCH better than using octane boosters, they have a nasty
habit of fouling spark plugs.
