'91 Stanza transaxle slipping

Hello all,
I'm no mechanic, so I hope someone can send me in the right direction. My
'91 stanza takes off and runs fine on flat terrain as long as you're easy
on the acceration. When accelerating quickly or going up a hill there is
slippage (motor revs up and speed decreases) along with a fast knocking
sound on the left side under my feet. Do I have a serious problem with the
transaxle or could it be the cv halfshafts? Is it possible for the right
side halfshaft to be ok and operating the car while the left side is shot?
I bought this little jewel new and it currently has 203k miles on it. The
motor still runs like it's brand new and it is in excellent condition
inside and out. I don't want to part with it but also realize I can't be
sticking a small fortune in a new transaxle. Any information would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance and have a nice day.

If Auto trans, try changing out filter and fluid or have it flushed.

Thanks for the reply. I did change the transaxle fluid but did not change
out the filter. My Chilton's manual says it never needs done, for what
that's worth. I think the vibration is the cv joint, the slipping is a
separate issue. I discovered yesterday that when I turn off the overdrive
the car shifts fine. I'm beginning to wonder whether or not I have an
electrical problem and not a mechanical problem. I guess I'll go have it
put on an analyzer and hope the guy doesn't try to bend me over.
