I have a 1992 Sentra with 140,000 miles on it. One day, it suddenly stopped
shifting from 1st to 2nd. It will run in Reverse and 1st but does not shift
beyond that. Still runs in 1st if you manually shift it into 2nd or 3rd.
Can anything other than something inside the transmission be causing this?

Could be, but it also could be the linkage between the shifter and the
trans. Perhaps a linkage rod came undone.

if the transmission is a 3 speed automatic check the governor gear.

chances are the nylon gear is worn and needs to be replaced
