I have a 1994 Pathfinder with 167,000 miles.
Whne shifting into reverse, the engine does a quick rev up but the tranny
does not engage into reverse.
Forward gear works fine.

Any ideas?

Two choices:
1.  Avoid places where you have to back up
2.  Overhaul the transmission

You're not low on fluid are you?

I think it sometimes helps to overfill the AT on the '94 Pathfinder.
YMMV.

Replace the trans with a rebuild or a used one, this is an ongoing problem
with Nissan and Mazda trans
