WASHINGTON -- The business community agency that ensures Internet
privacy has ended its relationship with a company that operates sites
including FreeiPods.com.
It's the Internet equivalent of having a Good Housekeeping seal revoked.
The group, TRUSTe, said Gratis Internet can no longer display the
industry's seal to assure customers that a Web site complies with
privacy-protection guidelines.
It's the first time in two years that TRUSTe has pulled the seal from a
site.
Gratis runs sites that claim to offer free products from iPods to
condoms to customers. In exchange, customers agree to accept trial
offers from other companies and refer friends to the sites.
TRUSTe did not say what rules the company violated.
Some privacy advocates said that leaves potential victims in the dark as
to what may have happened to information they gave to the site.

I wish they'd clue us in as to which rules were violated. It
could be something really minor and TRUSTe is being overly zealous in
enforcement (unlikely, but possible) or something major.

As I understand it, this is the first such action by TRUSTe so I
wouldn't think they'd do it for something minor and freeipod has the
stink of spammer so I wouldn't be surprised that they are doing
something illicit with the privacy info

It's also not very easy to break TRUSTe's TOS either.
