95 Pathfinder Transmission

I would like to get a heads up on what to expect on a transmission repair.

My 1995 Pathfinder V6 Automatic will sometimes not go into reverse. I had
the fluid changed a week ago, and it still does it. Does anyone know if this
is a little problem, or should i just look for a rebuilt transmission
somewhere?

Thank you

And had you ever changed it *before* it started acting-up? It's likely
rebuild time. It's about $2K to have it rebuilt. Be careful where you
get the rebuilt from (or who rebuilds yours). There's a lot of crap out
there.

I change the fluid every year at Jiffylube. They flush it and put in about 8
quarts or fresh fluid. If I race the engine a bit when this happens, it will
start to move slowly.

I have a '94 V6 Pathfinder that had a similar problem.  I phoned a
local auto repair radio talk show about this.  The host suggested that
I overfill the transmission a little bit.  Apparently overfilling is
bad for most transmissions, but not for mine.  Anyway, I overfilled it
by about a half qt. and the problem was solved.  It's been working
fine for about 2 years now.

Jim- did this come on slow or was it an overnight kind of thing?  I ask b/c
my 93 seems to hesitate just a bit after putting it in reverse.  Does not
happen every time, but on occasion.

Thanks

It happened overnight...tomorrow I plan to add another 1/2 quart to see what
happens.

I added 1/2 quart and the problem comes and goes. Should I add more, or just
bite the bullet and get the tranny rebuilt?

Tomorrow is the big day. I finally got a chance and picked up the tranny
filter & gasket kit. I also picked up 2 pints of Lucas No Slip...crossing my
fingers. :)

It doesn't have a filter, just a screen. Shouldn't have to change it,
just clean it (and hopefully there's not much to clean...). Be careful
not to over-tighten the pan bolts. They strip easy.

The filter they sold me was the wrong one. It looks like there is a small
screen. Mission accomplished. We shall see if the No Slip stuff works...stay
tuned ya'll. :)

I spoke to a neighborhood guy that use to work for Aamco Transmissions. He
now works for himself, and is licensed to do so. He told me my truck is
harder to work on because the torsion bars must be removed to drop the
tranny. Plus I also noticed that one of the exhaust manifolds runs directly
underneath the tranny.

So here is his proposal:

1. Removal of tranny.
2. Full rebuild of current tranny, which is in good shape overall.
3. Reinstall tranny.
4. Installation of tranny cooler.
5. $1250 complete with 1 year warranty.

I think this is a great price...any comments?

That's half of what a shop would charge. Just make sure you get a recent
reference or two.
Jim Rojas - 03 Apr 2005 01:39 GMT
He did my sister's 1998 Dodge Town & Country about 7 months ago...so far she
has had no troubles...her transmission was in worse shape than mine. Her
minivan would not even go into drive or  reverse for that matter.

transmission is RE4R01A filter screen should not be cleaned but replaced 50
mil screen and stops up easily normally torque converter clutch material or
clutch material will be found in filter , very common failure trans rebuild
is good idea and bypass radiator cooler since the cooler has baffle inside
that tends to trap crap and does not flush well at all.sounds like your
trans man is reaasonable with his price be aware this trans has 5 solenoids
in the unit that have a tendancy to fail especially the epc solenoid
<electronic pressure control>if the trans is sloppy shifting in all gear
ranges it would be wise to replace solenoid assembly 4 solenoids in block
average cost 125.00 us for aftermarket solenoids from Rostra. do not use any
fitzall aftermarket solenoids as they tend to be pieces of crap from the get
go. any questions reply directly to me ASE certified transmission
tech...dont buy a new computer for your car repair yours ask me for info

I have a 95 pathfinder. LEMON,LEMON,LEMON,LEMON,LEMON,LEMON.
hate this truck, worst decision I have made to purchase anything.
have owned the truck for a year. When I purchased the truck i
shifted fine, fluid was clean and smelt fine aswell. I drove it for
week and one time it suddenly stuck in third gear and will onl
upshift to fourth gear and that is it. It starts out in third
Sometimes I have a slight delay when putting it in reverse. All thes
simptoms came intermittenly. It went back and fourth form normal mod
to 3-4th gear mode, and slowly got worse. I changed the fluid an
cleaned the filter screen. I worked great for a few months and the
started on the downward cycle again and kept getting worse until no
it does not switch back and fourth anymore, now it is stuck in th
3-4th gear mode. This time I changed the fluid and it didn't make
difference. Then I had it flushed and didn't do anything different
I've been told it could be a electrical issue maybe (brainbox)? Als
been told sticky valve eventhough tranny flush didn't help. I jus
want to trade this thing back to the dealer that stuck it to me but
need a temporary fix like they did to me. Any sugestions? Thanks much
I'm very sick of spending wasted time and money on this and still ge
poor results. SUGGESTIONS

I can't believe that you didn't have the dealership deal with this in the
first place.  Your vehicle should still be under the full bumper to bumper
warranty, unless you're over the mileage limit, which I doubt.  If you've
spent this much money and time on a vehicle that's under warranty, my
suggestion is that you sell it and use the money to buy a clue.

Totally my bad.  I'm the one that needs to buy a clue.  I FUBAR'd this as
'05 for some reason.  My apologies.

What kind of miles are we talking about?  A rebuild may be the way to go, or
a simple used tranny may be the way to go.

How many miles? You bought a 10 year old truck. sh.t happens. Doesn't
make it a lemon. Get the trans rebuilt and enjoy. It may just be the TCM
or a bad solenoid, though the '95 is known to have overheat problems
(cooler lines were on the small side).

Dustin, My truck never once had warrantty. So the dealer would d
nothing about it. As for SLY, WHAT IS YOUR REMARK? Learn how to driv
a manual equipped car, meaning a manual transmission? What are yo
talking about? I appreciate any positive feedback from the decen
people out there. All you other people can keep your comments t
yourself. I'm thankful for any tips. Other than that don't bother t
reply. Dustin asked the mileage and it is 150k. Thanks

Transmissions do need rebuilt at some point, especially automatics.  150k
out of it is not bad at all.  Not to mention you bought a 10 year old
truck...

Get the thing rebuilt and enjoy it.  And be thankful it lasted this long -
my previous vehicle was an Explorer and I had to have the trans done @ 58k.
And I don't offroad, tow, etc.....
