For 2 years I smelled coolant after engine shutdown. Not much, just a whiff and it was gone.
Could never find a leak, coolant level was always the same. Took the vehicle in for 3 recalls.
Asked dealer to find the source of the coolant odor. They did a pressure check of the system.
Of course they did not find or fix the problem. 5 days after my 5 year/60k power train warranty
runs out (the truck has 35k miles) the right head gasket goes. Voila. The coolant leak has
been found. Nissan says they will fix it under an agreement with me for $150. I don't
think I should pay anything for this repair, as it was on paper before the warranty expired.
I found quite a few links on the net concerning this head gasket problem, but Nissan states
"it is not a problem".

If the coolant level never dropped in 35,000 miles, how much of a leak
could you possibly have had? I would take the deal. If this is a VG33
motor, I have never heard of a head gasket problem.

Well I would say if I can smell coolant, there has to be some sort of
leak externally to the powerplant. It was apparently weeping out of the
right cylinder head and vaporizing on the exhaust manifold. A quick
search on google revealed at least 4 vehicles with almost the same
mileage with head gasket problems. The dealer told me they did their
first one a few weeks ago on a 2002 with about 40k on it. Of course I
will take the deal !

Pay the $150 and consider yourself lucky.  Yes, Nissan screwed up but
you are getting a couple of thousand dollars worth of work for basically
 the cost indicated.
