I believe it's time to replace my 94 GXE's front struts after 114k miles.
(non-sonar)
What is a good brand/type to use if not the Nissan factory struts?
I don't want a "performance" ride (i.e. stiff or rough), I just want like
factory or maybe a slight bit firmer.

I replaced the front struts on my 92 Maxima GXE at about 50k back in '98.
I really disliked the ride which was kind of loose and swoopy.  I had a
speed shop put mild racing struts on.  Konki?  Anyway the whole attitude of
the car changed.  If it hadn't I would have sold the car.  At 140k it still
rides firm and handles great.  I haven't traded because I like the car so
well.  Much better than my wife's  '97 Maxima at 50k.  It was well worth
the money.
