I just got a '96 Pathfinder, that aside from the following problems seems
really nice.

1) Previous owner's dog liked to chew through all the seat belts - anyone
know where I can get a set (beige in color) ???

2) Rear shocks wobbly, went to replace them with better - but, upper
retaining bolts on both are seized.  Have already soaked them at least 6
times over the past day, and still wont budge.  Any suggestions out there ?

3) Due to the owner losing the Owner's Manual, I dont have one - but, its on
order (should be about 4-6 weeks).  Previous owner claims that he never
noticed that the spare was missing (hope I can go 5 years without ever
needing it!).  Went to a salvage yard and got a full wheel and tire from a
wrecked Pathfinder for $35.  Now the problem is that I can't seem to figure
out how to lower the chain that holds the spare under the vehicle.  I tried
inserting the long pole found under the back seat, but it doesnt seem to
attach to anything down the hole under the tailgate.  What the secret trick
to lowering the chain ???

Thanks !

Gary -

I've got a '96 that I bought new in 1997.

1)  Try eBay for your seat belts.  After awhile, just about anything
will show up there.

2) I just replaced my rear shocks.  The only suggestion would be to
get more leverage with a piece of pipe over the end of a socket
wrench.   Also, I replaced the rear shocks because I was getting a
wobble at highway speeds.  Problem is that the new shocks didn't solve
the problem.  I was just under the car tonight check to see if any
rubber bushing were missing or damaged or if anything else was loose,
broken or cracked.  I didn't see anything obvious that looked like it
was causing the problem.  I'm hoping that someone else in this news
group has the answer to this wobble problem. I don't know yet if this
is a common problem with Pathfinders. ( By the way, '96s have a
problem with their right exhaust manifolds cracking.  Mine did at
about 50K miles.)

3) The factory spare that came with my 1996 does not look like  a
"regular" tire.  As I recall, the manual or tire itself says not to
exceed 55 mph with it on. I hope the one you both fits in the bay on
your car. Anyway the trick to lowering the chain is to get the
cranking bar for the jack which should be located under the rear
seats.  At one end of the bar it should look like a "T" .  Now open
the rear hatch and look for a small oblong hole or opening above the
bumper and below the level of the rear compartment.  You insert  the
"T" end of the cranking bar into this opening and crank the chain down
with a counter clockwise rotation of the bar using the tire iron as
the handle.

Hope this helps.

Mine's a '97 Pathfinder but I too had to replace the right exhaust
manifold at about 50k miles.  The good news was it was still under
warranty.  :)

I also went through a period where I had a problem with wobble at
highway speeds.  I replaced struts up front.  Bought new tires.  The
dealer balanced my tires several times.  I finally got pissed and took
the service manager for a "ride." :D  After a further review, they
"found" that the rubber bushings at the front of the armature that
maintains alignment of the rear axle were bad and needed replacement.
There is one on each side and it connects to the axle at it's rear end
and the frame at the front, a little over a foot ahead of the axle.
Don't know what the technical name is but you should be able to ID it
from my description. You could tell mine was bad by putting the
vehicle up on the lift, getting under it, and giving the armatures a
good twist.  There was quite a bit of play in them and, after the
repair, I never had the problem again.

Now I have to use coffee to maintain alertness at the wheel.  :)

I found the following post on the NicoClub.com forum about the
"wobble" problem with '96 and later Pathfinders -

This Pathfinder has over 86K on it, can't see any sign about the manifold
yet (haven't had the time to dig through the engine compartment too much) -
will check it out.

Figured out the spare hoist - thanks !

Going to check the bushings later today, will get back !

Havent found any seat belts on eBay yet, but still looking

Gary -

FYI, I heard the exhaust leak before I actually saw the crack.

Hearing isn't much of an option when your missing over 40% of hearing  ;-)
