Today when I tried to start my car I got a hum so quiet that at first I
guessed it was a fuel pump or blower.  Each time I released the key
there would be a few seconds of clattering.

In case it was my flywheel, I pushed the car a few feet in gear and
tried again.  That didn't help.

Before I remove the starter, I'd like some advice.  Would cleaning and
lubricating the engagement mechanism be the solution?  Until today the
starter has performed consistently and well.

If the motor is humming it could be someone has put a fish under the
bonnet.
Is your battery connected?
Try whacking the motor with a hammer or better still, do a Basil Fawlty
and beat it with a branch, it'll soon get the message.

Cleaning and lubricating the engagement mechanism with WD-40 fixed it.
