Do you know what component is bad within the transmission or how to test
it?

5 spd manual? Not too bad if you have the right tools and a good manual.
But I'd lay odds you don't have the right tools.

I found it a snap. For 2 years I had an input shaft bearing making
noise on my 93 SE 5 spd. Was effecting the seal so I had a minor leak
so I just put up with it, topping off fluids as need be, until the
clutch finally cratered in my driveway.
Always frightened of trannys so never went inside one till now. Yanked
the sucker in the drive and opened it up in the kitchen. A good input
shaft bearing has 7 balls seperated by a race. Mine had but 3 remaining
and the metal remnants of the race were at the bottom of the case. HAd
to remove all the gear clusters to get to the bearing but didn't have
to yank gears and synchronizers and shims from their groupings.
Replaced bearing and seal and the thing's been groovy-2-shoes ever
since. That was 2 years ago. Car now has 267,000 miles (not km) on it &
no leaks, shifts fine. It's important to have the fat FACTORY service
manual and not some skinny Chilton's. Also important to change engine
oil every 2,500 miles & that 6 banger will make it to my kind of
mileage.

Nice Kitchen!
FWIW, the 6 will last that long with 7500 mile oil changes as well.
