and an 88 2wd  I bought the 4x4 because I had the 2x2 and I thought that I
would be able to interchange parts.
The guy told me that the only thing keeping it from running was the fuel
pump.  I took the tank off and removed the fuel pump... tested it w/ a meter
and it showed that it "should work" and which contacts on the connector
should run the pump... so,  I hooked the pump directly to the battery.  It
worked! Having already looked for the fuel filter,  I decided to look
better... Found it encased in a box (The best way to describe it)... and
took it out... It was clogged to the max... couldn't even blow through it. I
decided that THAT was the problem and changed the filter. I reinstalled the
fuel pump in the tank and hooked the lines to the pump and then tried to
make the pump Pump.  no go.  The other car was running so I changed the
relay from one car to the other.  no go.  I am a fair backyard mechanic,
but I'm stumped!
anyine got any Ideas?

When you say you "hooked the pump directly to the battery and it
worked"... does that mean you pumped some fluid with it?... or just
heard the motor running?

It pumped fluid! It didn't spray,  but it was a steady stream

And now you get no fluid pumping at the fuel rail? You have tried that
right?

Can you hear the pump running in the tank?
If not, start checking voltages from the pump back to the ignition switch
until you find the problem.  Also, it may have one of those electro boxes
that want to see the alternator turning before it will turn on the pump. My
truck does, and it won't turn on the fuel pump until you start cranking the
truck.

Except when I use connections from the battery,  It won't pump.

Well I took the tank ad dragged  it to the front.  I put a meter on the
different conncections and determined which ran the pump.  I put 12v on the
two contacts at the plug.  It pumped gas.  I checked the relay by removing
it from the not running car to the running car.  It ran. Even though it
runs,  there's NO exhaust system from the manifold back...  and the one I'm
trying to get running is a 4 wheel drive...
Mostly,  I want the fwd to run,  because I bought it with money I borrowed
from my wife with this dream of getting it going and bla bla bla
But!  after is all is said and done with the working relay,  with the FP in
the tank... Lines hooked up... lines not hooked up It won't pump being
hooked to the Plug
