The alternator went out leaving  us without breaks. Car has 14,000 miles on
it sheeesh . We had to pay for a 150 mile tow to get it to a dealer . This
sucks any advise who to talk to at Nissan to get reimbursed? TIA The local
dealer is saying he is not going to be any help in dealing with Nissan cuz I
did not buy it from him. I did actually try to but he did not understand the
part when we purchased it I was going to buy one the week I went looking. It
is the SE version. This same dealer provided the same type  service in
repairs to me to  a friend who bought a 350 z from them . The Z ended up
being bought back by Nissan as a lemon they now drive a Honda happily.I
think  the national highway people are about to issue a recall on these
alternators. It sucks to be stopped dead in the water in traffic with no
breaks as the engine dies. The only symptom something was wrong was the
battery light & break light came on and it died. Any help would be
appreciated.

You still had brakes, you just needed to push the pedal harder. Some
parts on some cars (even Hondas) will fail prematurely, it's just a fact
of life.

Thought it would be useful to have a more consolidated listing of members
reporting alternator failures, so I compiled this from postings on
freshalloy.com (F.A.) as well as nissanmurano.org (N.M.). (A column item is
left blank if that information was not included in the member's post.)

Please note that this is not a complete listing of alternator failures in
all Muranos sold, nor is it intended to represent a specific percentage of
failures in relation to the general population. Instead, it is a listing of
forum members who have reported alternator failures at freshalloy.com and
nissanmurano.org. The actual number of alternator failures affecting all new
Muranos is known only to Nissan.

There is a poll regarding alternator failures at link to poll. Although it
is not a scientific sampling, there appears to be a disproportionate number
of members reporting alternator failures in their new Muranos. Currently,
the poll indicates approximately a 40% failure rate among respondents, but a
greater overall sampling of members is needed. Please participate in the
poll, whether you have experienced an alternator failure or not.

This list is intended to expand on the poll to include model year and
mileage at failure. If you would like to add an alternator failure report to
this list, please post it below as a reply to this message and I'll update
the list with your information. Please include the number of miles at
failure and model year of your vehicle, and whether one or more replacement
alternators failed as well.

If any information listed below is incorrect or missing, or your report is
listed more than once, please let me know and I'll correct it. I'll do my
best to keep the list up-to-date.

You are also encouraged to file a complaint about a failed alternator with
the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at the NHTSA website. The
status of the NHTSA investigation can be found at this link.

TOTAL ALTERNATOR FAILURES POSTED BY FORUM MEMBERS: 155

Total includes 11 repeat alternator failures reported by members as
indicated.

List started on 9/5/04 with 70 reports, updated with new reports

True enough parts fail , my wife was driving she is a small person  ,luckly
we were only blocking four lanes when it died in the middle of the highway
JimV - 05 Jun 2005 20:26 GMT
Certainly looks damming, but unless you know the total sample size it's
not statistically significant.

Mario, thanks for re-posting our Alternator Failure List from
freshalloy.com and nissanmurano.org.

The list is simply a compilation of posts from those forums, so
therefore does not in itself have scientific statistical significance.
However, it does give an idea of how many people are posting alternator
failures on those forums.  You can view the on-going updated list at
http://www.nissanmurano.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4240&perpage=15&pa
genumber=1

There is also a poll at
http://www.nissanmurano.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2113
which shows a high percentage of respondents having experienced
alternator failures.  We are currently trying to get a larger sampling
for the poll.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently
conducting an investigation of Murano alternator failures and we hope
that they will reach a determination soon.

Mario, let me also mention that if you would like to be added to the
list, please click on one of the previous links and I would be happy to
do so.  Simply register as a member if you are not already one, then
post in either the Alternator Failure List or Alternator Failure Poll
threads.  There is a lot of discussion there on the topic.

I hope they were able to finally replace your alternator and get you
back on the road.

And everyone please note, when the Brake and Battery lights come on
together, it means an imminent alternator failure which will completely
disable your vehicle.   Contact Nissan service immediately to have the
alternator replaced.

New Information Added Since :  July 8, 2005

                 Make / Models :           Model/Build Years:
                      NISSAN / MURANO       2003-2005

Manufacturer : NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.

           NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 05V319000  Recall Date : JUL 12, 2005
           Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:ALTERNATOR/GENERATOR/REGULATOR
Potential Number Of Units Affected : 125466
           Summary:
ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT
A WIRE BREAKING INSIDE THE ALTERNATOR COULD STOP THE BATTERY FROM CHARGING.
           Consequence:
IF THIS HAPPENS, THE CHARGER WARNING AND BRAKE WARNING LAMPS
WILL IMMEDIATELY COME ON AND THE BATTERY WILL BEGIN TO DISCHARGE. AFTER A
SHORT TIME, THE ENGINE WILL GO INTO A "FALL SAFE" CONDITION WHICH WILL LIMIT
VEHICLE SPEED. THE ENGINE WILL STOP RUNNING WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
           Remedy:
DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPLACE THE ALTERNATOR WITH A NEW
VERSION WHICH HAS BEEN MODIFIED TO PREVENT MOVEMENT OF THE COIL. THE RECALL
IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON AUGUST 3, 2005. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT NISSAN AT
1-800-647-7261.
           Notes:
CUSTOMERS CAN ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY
ADMINISTRATION’S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY:

Sheesh now we all get to get our new alternator replaced again what a crock
.

>WELL SHUCKS ADD ONE TO THE STATS FOR ME .
Suppose that is my point instead of JimV's attitude you would think with the
known facts when you google it  Nissan would be putting out fires instead
of starting them. FAN THE FLAMES  makes real good sence. That is why Nisssan
got to buy back my buddy's  350Z plus interst BRILLIANT THINKING
Where is the FIREMAN ???
Mario - 10 Jun 2005 13:36 GMT
How long does take to switch out an alternator? It has been a week? The car
has handicap license plates. We bought  for our mother& father  who are  94
years old, fact the we bought the car to be able to haul them around. It
seems to us while Nissan does not have to legally give us a loaner common
business sense would tell them they are going to lose a customer & anyone we
know who might think of buying one. It is a new car. I cant even remember
the last car we had with an bad alternator 40 years ago maybe I switched it
out in 10 minutes after buying it a parts house. This is getting comical WFJ
