I noticed that the new Exterra is coming with a 4.0L 260 HP engine.

Why didn't they just drop in their "top 10" 3.5 liter like they have in so
many other vehicles from the quest to the 350Z?

I've got one in my FX and it puts out 280hp and the same engine in a Z can
get 300+ HP.

I like the Exterra but the knock on it has always been that it is
underpowered. I would think that a 3.5L 280 hp like they put in the Infinity
FX would be just what the doctor ordered.....

For a truck (it is spelt Xterra btw) geared for the off-road market,
torque is as, if not more important than just horsepower.  If you
compare the numbers (from edmunds.com, for 2005 models):

350Z track edition
HP: 287 HP @ 6200 RPM
Torque: 264 ft-lbs @ 4800 RPM

Xterra SE 4WD
HP: 265 @ 5600 RPM
Torque: 284 @ 4000RPM

The Xterra has more torque than the 350Z and that torque is available
at a much lower RPM.  The larger displacement is what allow the peak
torque to be available at the lower RPMs.

I'm not an expert on automotive engine design - so its just the
birds-eye view and my understanding (which may well be wrong).

Cheers.

The FX is built more like a car and shares the same platform as the
350Z/G35/M35. Nissan also put the 4.0 in the new Pathfinder and Frontier. So
I'd guess they are marketing that as the new engine for body on frame midsize
trucks/SUV's with the top-end V8 going into the Titan and Armada.

From: http://www.canadiandriver.com/news/040622-3.htm

"The powerplant is derived from Nissan's award-winning VQ engine series found
in the Nissan 350Z,...It features a longer stroke than the 3.5-litre version
and has been specifically tuned for SUV and truck applications."

For those of us that complained that the first gen Xterra was underpowered,
I think Nissan wanted to shut us up once and for all! It worked!
