Hi all
An older friend asked me to check his speedo on his Primera - I unscrewed at
the gearbox end - and turned the inner cable, the speedo head didn't budge.
I'm not fully convinced the heads gone yet. I tried to pulled the inner
cable through at the gearbox end but have a feeling it has to come through
the speedo head side - anyway I'm looking for advice on my next move.  Also
how do I prove the gearbox end is OK?

Yes you have to remove the instrument cluster to withdraw the inner cable
but before you withdraw it making sure that is firmly attached at the
gearbox end, drive the car forward and the instrument end should revolve.

Easiest way to check the speedo drive is to pull the cable off the head.
Cable is most likely/

You could get a spare cable and connect into the gearbox drive end. Jack up
the drive wheels securely and use the engine to turn the back wheels in say
2nd or 3rd gear and you should be able to see the speedo drive turn. The
easiest way however is to do this at the instrument head end.

However if there is something wrong at the gearbox end you can most likely
feel it with just the inner cable poked into the gearbox. Either the gear
has gone or the inside square of the gearbox gear is rounded off. The ones I
have seen are a plastic worm gear and were replaceable

All speedo inner cables that I have ever seen have to be pulled out from the
speedo and. The inner has a collar at the speedo end to prevent the inner
sliding down the outer cable.towards the gearbox end
