92 Sentra GA16DE 4sp auto. 173,000 mi. Original owner, clean. No major
problems. Do all minor repairs and upkeep myself.
It began missing at idle about 150 mi ago. Checked emissions as far as
I can, EGR etc seem ok.
Noticed a new ’click’ which sounds like valve. Read Haynes and AllData
- job is above my ability (age related, 72 and climbing). Called local
Nissan dealer Service Dept asked for estimate on valve adjust and
timing chain inspection. Was shocked to get price of $144.00 and done
in two hours. Is $144.00 a realistic price or a come-on to get me in
there for ’bait and switch’?
Thanks for any advice.

I found the answer, posting it for anyone’s info: Another Dealer
Service Dept said valve adjustment in the GA16 is done by replacing
any worn shims on the camshaft. There is no way to estimate the cost
without measuring the thickness of each shim with a micrometer and
replacing any that aren’t correct. The price of $144.00 given by the
other person would cover only accessing the camshaft for inspection.
