My old  (1995 1600) Primera did this too.  I found it slightly
off-putting, but since it did over 40MPG (UK gallons) for 50,000 miles
with this I decided it couldn't really be a problem.  I also noticed
that if I coasted in neutral the idle speed would stay high until I
actually stopped.  Wierd.

Your fuel consumption is a horse of another colour, and certainly worth
worrying about.  Any other clues?

Andy.

Evidently the first suspect with high fuel consumption is the oxygen sensor,
but I can't speak from experience as I've never had a problem in about
110,000m of Primera 2.0 motoring , getting around 39mpg in both a '94 and a
'97.  The one thing that got the '94 better than the original 34mpg when I
bought it was setting the timing to 17 degrees (the spec is 15±2 and it was
set to 11, the 1.6 engine is different though).
