I have a 96 Altima. It has been running fine since I bought it about 3
months ago. Yesterday I filled up with gas, drove the 2 miles home
from the gas station, it ran fine. I left about ten minutes later to
go rent some movies. About 10 minutes into my trip the car
inexplicably cut off. I had to coast to the side of the road. It
started back up and I made it to the store. As I was leaving the
store parking lot pulling onto the highway it cut off again. It
finally started up after many tries and I noticed the check engine
light came on. I made it home after that but I did notice a rattling
noise under the hood. This moring it started up and I did not hear
the rattling noise but the service engine light was still on. My
boyfriend drove it about a half a mile to his fathers house so they
could check a few things on it. When they tried to start it again it
will not start at all. Any ideas on what happened? Thanks, Raye

It could be literally any number of things. You should immediately get it
to a certified Nissan repair facility to have the codes read from the
analyzer.
I would not attempt to drive the vehicle any more until the cause of the
problem is found.
Have the vehicle towed to an authorized Nissan repair shop.
It could be something simple as an O2 sensor, or if could be something much
more serious. The fact that you filled it with gas just before this
happened may be coincidence, or it may be indicative of some type of
contamination in the gasoline (water). Make sure that you have the shop
test the gas tank for water and other contaminates.
Again, I would strongly urge not driving the vehicle; why risk unnecessary
damage?

A friend had similar symptoms with a 95 Altima for about two weeks when the
cam angle sensor was getting small amounts of oil in it. I don't recall if
the check engine light came on though.
