Hey gang! I’m pleased to have found this board because I have frequent
problems with my vehicles and today is no exception. I have a 1988
Nissan pickup, standard transmission and it’s been sputtering like
crazy and it’ll lurch while I’m driving. I just had it tuned up about
3 months ago but I’m wondering if I’m having a fuel pump problem or if
it’s a fuel filter clogging. I realize that the fuel pump is probably
located in the tank but is the filter easily accessible?
As you probably have figured out, I don’t know diddly about cars
except the simple, simple stuff. If you have any suggestions or a
diagnosis for me, I’d greatly appreciate it!

I'd replace the fuel filter first - it commonly causes what you describe.
Not sure where it would be located on your truck, though. Often there are
two filters. Check the library /bookstore to see if they have a repair
manual on your truck as that would show where the filter(s) are.
It could also be the pump or the pressure regulator. Before you replace
those, you may want to check the fuel pressure (requires a tool purchase).

I mentioned fuel pressure as a possible cause in my previous post -- that
may only be an issue if you have fuel injection so ignore that comment if
you have a carborator..
