Problem

I have a nissan micra that I am very happy with, now on Sunday i went to
petrol station to fill up and somehow (OH GOD) I got water in my petrol,
ok heres the thing, since then it has been in the garage three times that
is three times in four days.  It started bunny hopping or kangarooing,
lost power but did not stop and after 10 mins I was able to drive another
2 to 3 miles ( I had to get home).  Now we have no idea what is wrong,
yesterday I had a new distributor fitted, the problem is still there when
I get over 30 miles a hour, the day before a new fuel filter and the
problem was still there.  Three weeks ago a new exhaust system the problem
was not there then.

I NEED SOME HELP AND SO DOES THE MECHANIC!!!!!!!

IS it gear box???
IS it clutch???
or Has my beloved Micra started to die???

I am not sure what a Micra is but take it that must be a european
Nissan of sorts?

When the car stutters, does the engine speed drop? In other words, if
your car has a tachometer (RPM), does it drop in speed?

If the tach drops, it most likely isn't clutch but engine related. If
the tach stays the same or rises, it most likely is clutch or tranny
related. If so, whatever is stated below does not apply.

If it is engine related, it could be many things, all related to
different subsystems (fuel, air or spark).
If so, I'd first try to run some injector cleaner through a full tank
of gas ("petrol" for you most likely :) to see if that helps -- it
certainly never hurts.
Ask your mechanic to also check the fuel pressure. (It is a little
surprising he doesn't know what to check next, because that's a pretty
normal thing to check for)

If he replaced the distributor, most likely the wires and plugs were
replaced as well. If not, replace them too.

Some cars have dual fuel filters, so you may want to look into a repair
manual (read it in the bookstore or library) for your particular car to
see if that is true in your case. Often one resides near the tank, the
other under the hood.

All newer cars (96 and up) have an on board computer that can be read
with a special tool, called an OBD2 reader.
If something went wrong, the event is recorded in a log that this tool
has access to. If your mechanic does not have such a tool, you may want
to bring it somewhere where these codes can be read.

Hope this is useful to you and you get it fixed soon.

Tibby,
give us a clue:  Is this a K10 (squarish old model micra) or one of the
newer rounder ones, or even the latest one with the popeyed headlights?
The K10 had a carburettor engine, and the likely causes are all different.

Good point. Not being at all familiar with a Micra, I didn't know they
went back that far.

I am wondering wether the tank was completely drained after being
contaminated with water.
that is more likely to be the problem, traces of water still in the tank,
remember water will sit at the bottom of the tank while the pick-up will sit
about an inch off the bottom,
not sure if there is a drain plug in these micra's, i dont think there is,
so the tanks gonna need to be dropped down and drained properly.

What makes you think there was water in the gas?

What did you do to get rid of the water in the gas?

Water in the gas isn't going to damage the distributor.

If it's a micra K11 (about 1993 through to the new, new shape) then it could
be the throttle body air flow meter. It's about the only common fault with
the Micra K11 and causes very poor and uneven running.

The bad news is that a Nissan replacement is v expensive circa £500, the
good news is that you can get a recon and swap it over for (maybe) £150. Its
quite an easy job, even a monkey like me can do it. Mine was 10 years old
before it needed doing.

Have a look at the link below, any of the symptoms familiar ?

Good luck
