Hello,
I apologize for the poor English (English is not my native language).
The brake light indicator (on the control panel, not on the rear of the
car) is almost always lit on my car which is a Nissan Prairie (it is
very old, but I don't currently have the year :\)
It is of course very annoying, firstly because I don't like having a red
indicator always lit, and secondly because I have to send the car for a
technical test in a few weeks and the car won't pass the test if this
light is lit.
First, does anyone have the service manual of this vehicle ? (if no,
please continue reading)
I would be extremely happy if someone could scan and send to me the
pages related to the electrical wiring of the brake subsystem. I have a
good electric/electronic background and I can easily investigate if I
have enough technical informations.
Ok, now the symptoms: It (the brake indicator being lit) first started
several months ago, where it was sporadically lighting itself; it seemed
to be related to the park brake, because when enabling/disabling the
park brake several times the brake bulb switched itself off. It was also
lighting itself randomly while driving.
Then, with time, it was harder and harder to switch off, and now it is
almost always on.
I investigated a little bit today. I opened the park brake lever, and I
found the electrical switch. It seems to be a switch that shorts a wire
to the ground when the park brake is enabled. So I tried to disconnect
this wire, as if the park brake was disabled, but the bulb was still
activated.
So I thought that maybe it is a problem with the brake fluid check
system, which checks the amount of available fluid. Of course, the fluid
level is just below "MAX", and higher than "MIN". I have found a small
electrical switch (?) just below the brake fluid container, and maybe
this is the problem.
===> Does anyone knows which kind of sensor it is ? Is it optical (if
yes it could be dirty) ?
This sensor is connected to an orange electrical box, among with other
wires (the box is approximately 10x8x2 centimeters / 5x4x0.5 inches).
===> Does anyone knows what is this box exactly ? Any schematics (yes, I
am dreaming :)) ?
I wasn't able to find how to open it. There is a label on it but it is
heavily damaged and not readable.
I have some pics available on request; if I foudn a way to put them on a
webpage somewhere, I will do it ASAP and post the URL in a reply to this
post.
Thanks a lot for reading !..

Hello again,

In case some people are interested:
After spending some time on the car, and thanks to some clues I was able
to read here, I finally found the cause of the problem: a bad contact in
one of the connectors behind the indicators panel. However, I didn't
find the exact cause and although the problem is now solved (the brake
indicator works correctly), it is unfortunately temporary as I didn't do
anything but disconnecting and reconnecting the connectors : the bad
contact will appear again... sometime, maybe after I'll have thrown away
the car ;)
Too bad I can't easily replace the battery of the digital clock as I
don't want to open the indicators assembly (the clock is reset each time
I use the car, because the clock is powered only when the car is
switched on, that's why I suppose there is a battery somewhere in the
indicator panel to maintain the current time).
