I have a 1997 Nissan P/U 2400 4 cyl.thats only giving me about 14 miles to
the gal. I've changed the heat sensor,t-stat,new air filter, plugs, etc.
Runs great with 110,000 miles. Doesn't seem to have back pressure from the
converter, so I don't know where else to look. If anyone can help, I would
greatly appreciate it..........

14 is about the top of the scale as far a mileage for that truck, when it
get below is when you have to start worrying

I have a 2004 frontier 4 cyl w/automatic. I regularly get 20-25MPG,
sometimes a bit more if it's all highway driving.

My '97 4-cyl got about 17 (city) - 20 (hwy), so 14 seems low to me also. No
ideas on why yours is so low though. Maybe bad 02 sensor is making it run
really rich?

Experiecned similar problem on 98 Altima. Mileage could not get past 21
(car is rated 24-30). Turned out to be the temps sensor. Please note, on
the Altima, there are 2. One temp sensor operates the gage in the
instrument panel, the other one reports to the car computer, or ECU. The
ECU one was replaced. What must have been happening is that the faulty
sensor made the car 'think' it was cold even when warm, so the car
continued running rich, hence the lousy mileage. Also, please note, it
took several tankfuls for the change to really take effect as I guess
the ECU took it's time re-learning/adjusting it's feul/air mix.
Now the altima gets great mileage.
Hope this helps.
Come to think of it, you proably have the same engine in your Quest as
in our Altima, the KA24DE, right? Same motor!

Also, the temp sensor is a cheap part, $6.

1991 4cyl 5sp with 190k miles gets 25-29 mpg country driving. Exhaust is
custom otherwise stock. Use syntho oil changed every 10k miles. Burns
1/2 qt in 10k miles.regards.

You know, it used to be that if someone said 5-speed, you knew it was a
manual. Nowadays, not anymore:) Sheesh, Mercedes even now has a 7-speed
automatic.

My 1998 Frontier gets 22-27. I work for Nissan and have heard numerous
times that "our" smaller trucks and SUV's are slightly "under powered",
even with V6's. I'm pretty sure that most of these types of trucks are
meant for good low end performance and not high end gas mileage. I have
considered putting in another camshaft for performance rather than
endurance and torque, but I will leave well enough alone. 20-27 MPG is
good enough for me when it comes to a second vehicle used primarily for
"hauling" purposes.
Have Auto Zone check out your OBD(on board diagnostics) through the DDL
connector under the dash. Maybe they can "find" some codes that will
tell you about your poor mileage. IMHO... 14 mpg IS poor mileage.

Thanks, My wife bought me a Lab.Puppy for my birthday, so I had to get
a truck to take her back and forth to the river so I could let her swim.
Most of the time the truck just sits in my yard until I take the monster
to the river...Ha!
My son found my problem a couple weeks ago. Who ever serviced the truck
last, left the breather hose disconnected from the air filter base causing
fresh air to flow over the sensor thats mounted to the filter base. Now i'm
getting 23 miles to the gallon around town. Tahnks, again.

When I bought my truck, I immediately "tuned" it up. It ran great, but
at highway speed the "check engine light" came on. I took it to AutoZone
and checked OBD. The code was for a flow sensor that richened the
gas/air mixture. We could smell the extra gas it was putting out. I told
the guy checking the OBD that I had just replaced the air filter and
that it must be "confused" since it was now getting "more" air. Sure
enough, he cleared the code and the CEL hasn't come on since.
