Where is the temperature sensor on a 2000 Maxima and how hard is it to
replace?

Which temperature sensor are you referring to? There is a sensor that
sends the signal to the cluster temperature gauge and then there is the
engine coolant temperature sensor.

Why are you replacing it? (What are the symptoms.)

I want to replace the engine coolant temperature sensor.  I am having
what I call stumbling start ups early in the morning.  Does not do it
except if the car sets up overnight.  It is noticeablely less intense
in the stumbling based on the higher temperatures outside.  Worse in
the winter.  When it is in the 30's the car will choke down then
restart with no problem.  Acts like it is not getting any gas then it
goes on and you don't have any more trouble.  Nothing shows on the
electronic checks that have been done.  Nissan replaced a sensor in the
rear of the car but that did not do anything.  I have also replaced the
fuel filter in the tank.  Nothing.  It got better after we replaced the
started because it went bad, but I think that is because the weather
just got hotter.

The ECTS is in the upper radiator hose on the drivers side of the
engine (to the right of the front valve cover).  There are two temp
sensors there.  One is the ECTS and the other is the gauge temp sending
unit.

I can't remember which is which off hand, but the ECTS is easy to
replace.  Just disconnect old sensor, unscrew using a socket (14mm
IIRC) and screw in new/reconnect harness.  I have heard mixed things
about using teflon tape on the threads of the new sensor - perhaps
Nisstech of Steve T will offer their advice in this matter (they are
the pros!).

Cheers.
