I posted a while back about some squeaky noise coming from the steering when
I make very tight turns, this noise comes from the inside of the car. When
I took my car in for scheduled maintainance I told them about this noise.
They told me later on that this is probably a U joint loose or broken inside
the steering column. The cost to take it apart to see if it is this U joint
is $400 and the cost of this part is about $100 plus misc charges it will be
about $625 and since it takes two days to do it I need a rental car it will
end up costing me more than $700. Can someone tells me if this U joint if
broken or loose is it something that will affect the function or safety of
the car? The dealer did not seem too concern and told me I can wait a while
before doing this...
TIA,
MC

So that's what's sqeeking huh. First time I ever heard of that...
although I guess it's possible. They're right... that joint is a real
pain to replace. Don't think there is any reason to believe there is a
safety issue (that joint is pretty beefy and gets very little use
compared to other joints of that design used in other places on
vehicles)... but it certainly could be very annoying.

There is no definitive way to determine whether that is the problem without
taking the steering column apart? Any other tests I can do that may help
decide if that is the problem?
Thanks in advance,
MC
