Hi.

My friend's Silvia's speedometer is not operational.  All other in-car
instrumentation, such as temperature gauge, fuel gauge, and tachometer, are
operational.

The speedometer sometimes, either:

- wakes up and appears to operate as it should

- winds itself past 180 kmh

Has anyone experienced these symptoms?

Kind Regards,

Has your friend tried pulling the entire cluster out, and reinserting
it?  I know that in the SR20 and KA24 engine models, the plug that
connectgs to the cluster sometimes becomes loose; CA18 uses a different
cluster, so this may or may not be an issue.

I'll run your advice on pulling the entire cluster out and reinserting it.
Have you done this yourself?  I am interested in the procedure of pulling
out a cluster.

Thanks for your help.

I haven't done it myself; I got halfway and gave up b/c of bad weather
(doing this in my driveway + rain = bad combination).  It isn't that
hard; but if you do it without taking out the entire dash, you have to
"drop" the steering column.  From what I remember, I took out the
underside panels (under the steering column/cluster), and loosened the
bolts holding the column up.  This allowed it to drop a little, and I
was able to pull out the bezel around the cluster; but that's as far as
I got.

There should be an online copy of the CA18DET (1989-1990?) Silvia
factory service manual (FSM) which has instructions on how to pull it.

I agree - lots of room and good weather is highly desirable when working on
your own car.  My friend knows lots of people who are D-I-Y (Do-It-Yourself)
type of people with their cars.

I would like to know how to get a copy of the online service manual.  My
friend would find it very useful.  He's a very enthusiastic Silvia owner.

Thanks very much for your advice.  My friend is very keen to have a
speedomoter ;-)
