I have a 97 Nissan Quest, there's a loud tapping sound that comes from the
front valve cover, when you first crank the car, after awhile the noise will
quiet down, but still very noticable. From what i understand there is no
valve adjustment for this vehicle? Looks like i have to take the distributor
out to take the valve cover off, any instructions? Thanks.

how long does it take for the sound to quiet down?
whats the mileage on the engine?
what brand of oil and oil filter are you using?
what is the maintenence record been on the van?

i would have to say prolly until normal operating temp.
about 75k
fram filter and quakersatte 10/30 oil
I have done sparkplugs, wires look ok, i believe fuel filter has been
changed. As far as engine goes

There you go.. The oil jets in the block are partcially plugged up from
"sludge". You won't fix anything pulling the valve cover unless it's to
remove the head, clean the jets and replace the lifters. Been there done
that one, just replacing the lifters is a waste of time. Also probably need
to pull the pan and clean the sludge out of it as well. I'll bet what you
find under the valve cover will be a bunch of nastly black sludge.

Despite the other opinions, there's nothing wrong with Quaker State and
Fram. They both meet manufacturer's warranty requirements. If the oil
hasn't been changed very often the lifters get dirty. You can try some
upper cylinder cleaners (Like Risolone) that might help. The noise isn't
doing any harm and it goes away so no worries.

Yet his lifters are now noisy. But you are right, it made it out of
warranty.

I would blame going too long between oil and filter changes rather than
the brand of oil and filter. I had a lifter in my Mazda MX-6 that was
noisy at startup for years. It didn't "mushroom" the valve stem as you
suggested in another post. In fact, the engine got severely over-heated
a time or two and most of the lifters were gummed up from "burned" oil.
Since I used Castrol, that blows your "brand" bashing. All brands of
oils are subject to sludging and gumming given the right conditions. I
replaced all 12 lifters (HLA's - Hydraulic Lash Adjusters) myself and
now have 250,000 miles on the engine. If an engine is taken care of, it
will last.

Just saw this gem, have you ever taken an engine apart that had "cold start"
lifter problems? It totally beats the crap out of the ends of the valve
stems and hammers flat spots on the camshaft.
