I need to change my pads and i'm almost positive the rotors will nee
to be changed as well on my 2001 nissan sentra (1.8

My questions are
1. How difficult is thi
2. What tools will I nee
3. Quick instructions would be nic

Is it worth doing it yourself or should I pay the $600 or so to ge
someone to fix them?  From the searching i've done on the web i
looks like this will cost me ~$160 for the rotors and ~$70 for th
pads (so if i do this myself i will save around $370!).  I als
noticed that there are several different types of rotors for m
vehicle - which kind should I be getting

thanks

Benny, no way in ##@##$$$ should you pay them to do this brake job. it is
not very difficult at all. you can go get yourself a Haynes or Chilton
repair manual($10-15 bucks) and do it yourself. . what i did when i first
learned was jack up the whole front end and take off both tires and then do
one side at a time. this way you have one side for reference. there's
usually a couple of hex screws that hold the calipers onto the rotor and
once you loosen them you slide the pads off the rotor and get them out of
the way, maybe with a little rubber mallet's help. you then can pull the
rotor off and put the new one on. sometimes there's a clip over the wheel
studs to hold the rotors on, just pull them off and the rotor will come
right off. i found when trying to put the new pads over the rotors 1) put
the blue anti- squeal stuff on the back of the pads, 2) suck a little brake
fluid out of the area where you add and monitor the brake fluid levels.3) i
use a C clamp and a small piece of wood inside over the wheel cylinders to
get them pulled all the way back, otherwise the new pads won't fit over the
rotors.. 4) when done add dot 3 brake fluid back to the reservoir to the
full mark and you should be good to go. any questions feel free to ask again
and good luck. i hate to see people get ripped off. :-)

benny, that price seems high for the pads& rotors, check your local autozone
for the right pads and rotors for your car. you'll need some hexhead or
allen wrench to fit t he caliper bolts and lug wrench to remove tires and of
course a jack and a pair of jackstands for safety :-)

Be sure to bleed the brakes when finished also.

Thank you everyone!  I think I should be able to get this done now.
So you guys also think that this price is too high for breaks/rotors
That also makes me happy - I'll be heading over to autozone today t
see what their prices are.  With any luck i'll be installing thi
stuff over the weekend

You were right!  I went to autozone and am getting pads for less tha
$13 and rotors for less than $34!!

I'm also going to pick up a kit that they recommend (not sure what i
in it).  Making the total cost less than $120... another $11
saved... woots

the front brakes dont require the brake kit, all you need is the brake pads,
brake grease and the rotors if they are indeed in need of replacing, take
the " brake kit " back

I just replaced my front pads at 46K miles on my 2001 Sentra GXE. I
definatly didn’t need rotors. I didn’t have any problems getting the
pads on. I was wondering what I would need break grease for though.
Thanks

<snip>

The brake grease was supposed to go on the backing plate behind the pads at
contact points to prevent noise and binding.

If you're getting pads for $13, you're getting crappy pads with no
shims. They are going to sqeek and dust like crazy.

for one thing , what makes you think you need rotors.

Have the brake pads gone metal to metal and destroyed the rotors?

Have you put a micrometer on the rotors and determined that they are
undersized and need replacing ?? I think not...

Chances are, this is the first brake job the car has incurred, chances are
the existing rotors are ok and all that need to be done to the rotors is
resurfacing.
