I have a 2000 nissan sentra gxe, every once in a while I'll have a problem
where it won't start.  I can still turn on lights, radio, etc., but the
engine will not turn over or start.  I'll wait a while, maybe 15 -30 mins and
it will start right up, as if nothing is wrong.  It runs fine, no hesitation
or problems starting any other time, just a rare occasion.  I'm concerned now
because it has happened maybe 3 times in the past 2 weeks.

Has anyone ever had this problem, could it be the starter or ignition?

I've attempted to have a free starter testing at Advance or Discount Auto
Parts, they say I need to take out the starter.

Is this something I could do on my own (taking out starter to test or even
replace)?

Thank you.

Do you hear a fairly loud 'click' under the hood?
Disconnect the battery first. Clean the contacts to the starter and
reconnect the battery. It could be that your contacts are dirty.

Next time it happens, do this:
You'll need a piece of wood and a hammer.
Put the piece of wood on the starter and whack the other end of the piece of
wood with your hammer (or shoe).
If it now starts, it is a good chance that your starter is on its way out.

Hope this is useful.
