Hi,

I am about to buy a 2002 Maxima, but have noticed it has probably 70
chips on the hood- they are not DINGS, just chips. The dealer said he
would touch up the paint, but will that work ?  Please help ! It’s
alot of money if it won’t last and I will be stuck.

Thanks!

The only other option is a repaint. ANY paint is going to chip with use.

It will "last" but it probably won't look that good. I'd tell them you
want to see it touched up before you buy it. The right way to do it is
for a body shop to repaint the front end.

That's an awful lot of chips on a newish car.  Was it driven on gravel
roads a lot?  - and if so, is there any underseal left?

Not really - depends on how and where you drive it.  I have an '04 G35
and the front end looks like it's been sandblasted @ 30k.  Never seen a
gravel road.  Why?  Lots of little rocks here on the interstates and in
the winter they use a salt/gravel/ash mix on the roads.  Even keeping
distance from the car in front of me, I still get the chips.  Just a
fact of life here.

The new environmentally friendly paint doesn't help either.

Thanks for all the help.  We have gotten the dealer to paint the whole
hood, and no touch-up will be done.

Sounds like this dealer is quite desperate to sell this car :-)
After he does the painting, you can always complain about
the color match between the hood and the reast of the car ;-)
I hope you did not paid any money in advance...

Don't expect the paint to match...and you can also expect no prep to make
the paint "permanent".  In a year, the new paint will craze, crack and peel.
I advise you to stay away from this car.  The previous owner obviously had
little care for the car, it was probably not well maintained, and the dealer
seems eager to get it off the lot...
At the very minimum, ask to have the car taken to a reputable mechanic that
*YOU* choose for a thorough mechanical and electrical inspection.  It would
also be advisable to have the VIN Number checked through CarFax.  It could
be a reclaim from a vehicle previously declared "totaled".

When you sell it, someone might pass on the car or pay less because the it's
had "paint work."  Without knowing why, they might assume the damage was
worse than it is. If you end up buying the car, might take a "before" pic to
show the paint was done merely because of the chipping.

the main thing you need to know about paint work is, it is only as good as
the prep work.

If the prep work is crap then the paint job is crap.

Why purchase the car you DONT LIKE ?
There are so many good cars on the market...
Touch up looks awful.
