113K miles. (I bought it 5 years ago with about 100K miles so it's not
frequently driven.)  When the  vehicle is driven heavily loaded,
especially with lighter weight oil, it will start making what sounds like
lifter noise.  (And recently, when I started it several times in
succession for only seconds at a time, I experienced a tapping sound.)
After this, if the truck is driven normally for some time, the tapping
goes away.  I've looked at a Haynes manual but it doesn't seem to show
lifters for the 4 cylinder engine (??). Can someone give me some
information on this engine and any advice ?

Stop using light weight oil?

I have a 96 P/U that has "lifter noise" also.
I took it to a shop recommended by a friend. The mechanic said he used to
work at a Nissan dealership. He told me that he had seen several vehicle
owners with the same problem. He said there was nothing wrong with the
vehicle, and that was a normal noise emmitted from the engine. Skeptical,
I took it to the dealership, and spoke to a mechanic there. He told me the
same thing, almost word for word. That's the way they sound brand new.

Sorry I missed the original post but yes, that `tick tick tick' from
day one when they were new was most likely injector click (most people
coming in asked about `lifter tap').  And yes, it's normal.  When you
don't hear it, it's either clogged or dead.
