'05 Sentra Key fob problem

My mom bought an '05 Sentra. She drives it very little. Since May, has only
350 miles on it.

Anyway, when she got the car, the salesman didn't have the key fobs for it.
So she had to take it back about a month later when they came in. They were
programmed, and she was on her way.

About a month ago, both fobs stopped working. My sister stopped by the
dealership and they said the fobs probably aren't working due to lack of
use. Like I said, my mom doesn't drive very much, but this sound like BS to
me

Can anyone clue me in as to what might be going on? Can I reprogram them
myself (be easier than taking it back to the dealership)?

Thanks!

total bs, a remote doesnt stop working just because its rarely used,
especially a new one

I can't comment on this specific case, but my Primera keyfobs stopped
working and it turned out that the very fragile, crap quality switches had
fallen apart. Luckily, electronics is my 'thing' and I replaced them with
superior quality switches. Problem solved.

In any case, it's surely up to the dealer to sort the problem. I'd go back
and insist it gets sorted out ASAP.

About twice a year my Maxima forgets the key FOB's.
I have to re-program the car, problem solved. It's a foible I live with. On
a new car, I would not expect this type of behaviour at all.
One thing that is interesting, is that on at least 3 occasions, this has
happened near another persons residence.
I wonder if the proliferation of wireless phones, cellphones, wireless
internet and the like occasionally leads to interference that causes this
problem.

You don't live near a Radio Ham by any chance? The keyfob frequencies are in
the LPD band which happens to be within the Amateur Radio 70cm allocation. I
can 'listen' to my keyfob transmitting on my 70cm set!

There's been some problems with Radio Amateur transmissions blocking
keyfobs, but I'm not sure if such transmissions could corrupt the keyfob
decoder. It's certainly theoretically possible.

The LPD band was a bad idea from the start, it was obvious that problems
would arise.

Yes.  And also malicious remote reprogramming is possible if criminal's
device is powerful enough (transmission power)
Electrical Engineer here.

Ah, so as he keys up his transmitter and I also key up my FOB at the same
time, the car goes wonky and locks the FOB out cause it thought it was being
hijacked?

A possible scenario?

Wonder if the Remote Entry system is that smart? Could be.

Maybe the code sequence is not as robust as other vehicles.

Thanks for all the info, but can someone point me to a Web page or reply
with instructions to reprogram the FOB?

I did find a web page that said to get in the car, put the key in the
ignition and pull it out/in 6x within 15 seconds. Then follow more
procedures.

Should I try following that procedure?

The procedure is going to be something like that.  It can't hurt to try the
procedure you have.  If it is the wrong one, the car will not respond to it
and everything should remain as it is.

In my experience, the parts guy at the local dealer has always copied the
instruction page for me gratis when I needed it.  Here too, it can't hurt to
ask.

But - as someone else pointed out, if this is an '05 it is certainly still
under warranty.  Take it in.  It is the dealer's responsibility to fix it.
