Was 2001/2002 a good year for Pathfinders?

Looking to buy a used vehicle. I'm leaning towards a 2001 or 2002
Pathfinder. That's just old enough to fall within my budget, and just new
enough that they have the VQ series engine. (Don't feel like dealing with
the VG's manifold woes anymore!)

Were 2001/2002 considered "good" model years for the Pathy? Are there any
common (expensive) problems that could come up that I should be aware
of?(like the manifold/studs on the WD21 Pathy's?)

Anything specific I should look at when checking these vehicles out?

Thanks!

they are the same car, but the 2002 is better. according to cars.com, the
rating is higher for 2-5 years.

I traded a '99 QX4 on a new '01 QX4, and was (and still am) completely
satisfied with the upgrade.

I downloaded the users manual for the 91 Pathy and it says to use 91 octane
gas for the VQ engine in these cars.

Is that really required? Will it run ok on 87 octane? A sales guy at one
of the dealerships claims it will, that 91 is not really required and
they've found they run fine on 87 octane. Don't know if i should believe
him...

Are you talking about '91 or '01 as the title of your post suggests?

For the '01-'02 Pathfinders with the 3.5 liter engine, my '02 owner's manual
states that 87 is required, but you can use 91 for "improved performance".

The implication here is that it really wants 91, but the knock sensor &
engine computer should prevent it from self-destructing on 87.

As the price of gas has jumped to the $3/gallon range, but (at least here in
the Dallas area) the difference between 87 and 91 is still holding at 20
cents/gallon, the difference in price is becoming less significant, so it
makes less and less sense to cheap out and use 87.

Oops - yeah I meant 2001 for the OM download.

Interesting perpective - makes sense!... as the price of gas increased,
the difference between grades becomes less signifigant. Never thought of
it that way!

I can tell the difference in power when using different octane ratings
ONLY when I pull a trailer through the mountains of KY or TN.  Around
town and with no trailer, I don't put my foot into it enough to notice.

Thanks everyone!

Well, we ended up getting a 2003 Xterra.  We'll take our chances with
manifolds for a few years (lol), then trade it for what we REALLY want -
another 2005 X (that's our other vehicle). The 2001/2 Pathy's were really
nice, but in the end my wife and I decided we just liked the X better, and
for the same $$ we got a newer one.
