Are you talking about '91 or '01 as the title of your post suggests?
For the '01-'02 Pathfinders with the 3.5 liter engine, my '02 owner's manual
states that 87 is required, but you can use 91 for "improved performance".
The implication here is that it really wants 91, but the knock sensor &
engine computer should prevent it from self-destructing on 87.
As the price of gas has jumped to the $3/gallon range, but (at least here in
the Dallas area) the difference between 87 and 91 is still holding at 20
cents/gallon, the difference in price is becoming less significant, so it
makes less and less sense to cheap out and use 87.

Oops - yeah I meant 2001 for the OM download.
Interesting perpective - makes sense!... as the price of gas increased,
the difference between grades becomes less signifigant. Never thought of
it that way!

I can tell the difference in power when using different octane ratings
ONLY when I pull a trailer through the mountains of KY or TN. Around
town and with no trailer, I don't put my foot into it enough to notice.
