How about a lot of Fords which have inferior speed control disablement switches that catch on fire?

I loved my 83 (?) Laurel. It was about 12 years old, in great condition and
the engine (about 90,000 miles) ran like new. 2 Litre 6 cylinder, smooth and
quiet with plenty of pull, but very economical. The interior was pleasant
and comfortable.

I would have kept it for longer than I did (about 2 years) but for two main
reasons.

Firstly, here in the UK they aren't exactly plentiful in scrapyards and I
was concious that a major fault would be a big problem which could see the
car scrapped. I sold it on while it was still tidy and worth something.

Secondly, the disappointing steering system. Suffice to say it gave me grief
and soured my opinion of the car a little. It always felt like it was
wandering a little. I also had to replace the linkages to solve a problem
where it would become extremely stiff when steering towards full lock.

Still one of the better cars I've owned though. Nissans in general make
tremendous secondhand buys IMO.

I have a 05 Maxima SE, and I am very unhappy with the
performance of the autodimming rearview mirror. It often
fails to detect glare, especially when it is relatively
bright outside. Even at night I am sometimes blinded by
vehicles behind me because the damn thing fails to oppacify
for some unknown reason. It is also slow in reacting,
when it reacts to glare.

Unfortunately, there is no way to manually dim that mirror,
and as far as I know, there are no other controls on it.

Or are there?
Any suggestions for an aftermarket mirror that has a manual
mode?

Thanks!

Two ideas.
1.  There should be some software settings to alter the sensitivity and
rate of change for that auto dimming mirror.

2.  Check with Nissan to see if that car or a lesser model came with a
manual dim mirror.  Before swapping it out determine if removing the
mirror will somehow foul up one of the cars computers.  It shouldn't,
but ask any way to be safe.

A few years ago there was only one manufacturer of these electrochromic
mirrors, and that may still be the case, so they probably all work the
same.  Verify with your dealer that it is working at all, and that you
know how to use the controls properly.  They simply do not work as well
as manual mirrors.  You'll get used to it, or it will drive you nuts.

That's a shame.

Are they made in America or something?

Here here! Sometimes new technology just ain't worth the bother, and
thesauto mirros are the perfect example. I've experienced auto-dimming
mirrors in Nissans and Mercedez Benzes. Hated them both. Give me a
manual mirror any day.

Hmm, wanna trade?  The auto-dimming mirrors in my Audi A4 are too aggressive,
getting dark even before the sun sets and often getting so dark that the only parts
of other cars which are visible are their lights.  At least that ought to be easy
to fix; some black ink on the rear-facing sensor ought to reduce its sensitivity
to light (though I've never gotten around to trying it).

Actually, I wish a lot of these auto-whatever features would go away.  They're
designed for people who are too lazy or stupid to figure it out themselves, and
probably too dumb to be allowed to drive.  I never found it difficult to flip the
little switch on the rear view mirror on my previous cars.  Nor have I ever found
it difficult to turn on the wipers when it rains or turn my headlights on when it's
dark.

Amen to that last paragraph!

I have that auto-dimming on my 03 max.  It works great and I love it.

It also works perfectly in my 1998 jeep grand cherokee.  Nice feature.

As long as you keep buying cars with these features, such as your A4,
they're not going to go away.
