Hi to all:

I just purchase a 1997 Nissan Altima with about 83,000 miles on it.
Maintainence records, clean oil, etc.
I noticed when driving at about 2,700 to 3,000 rpm I hear what sounds
to be a rattle...They type that may come from a shield or guard. The
frequency of the rattle stays constant as you rev the engine past
2,700 rpm.  I've also listened under the hood, revving the engine by
hand, and it seems as though it's coming from under the engine.  I
must say though, that it is more noticeable inside the car than while
listening under the hood.
The exhaust system was recently replaced.  When listening inside the
car, it seems as though it's coming from under the engine.  It also
sounds like it may be a bearing.  Does the idler wheel sometimes
produce this noise?  Could a frayed serpentine belt produce this
sound?  (Or whatever the belt is that rides against the idler pulley)

I stopped in my driveway, revved the engine up to the 2,700 rpm point
and hear the rattle.  I guess I can rule out the transmission.

Any ideas?  The guy that sold it to me just had the plugs changed,
changed the oil with Mobil 1 synthetic.  Other than the rattle, the
engine has lots of power, and I cannot see anything obvious->  I'm not
a mechanic though  :(

Thanks for the help.  I hope that it's nothing serious.

It might be a rattling heat shield or something like that. Isolating it
is often tricky.

I found that fishing pole tips or gardening sticks makes excellent poor
man's stethoscopes: put one end of the stick on the suspected part.
Hold the other side in your fist and put it to your ear. You should be
able to pinpoint the offending part this way
(your neighbors will probably talk about you now, using a fishing pole
to fix a car :)

Hope you find it soon.

You can try pushing on the exhaust pipe with a stick while the car is
running and making the noise to see if it makes it go away.  If it does,
check the hangers and heat shields.

That engine had known issues with the timing chain tensioner and guides in
earlier models, possibly still in 97.  The symptom is a rattle at a certain
RPM range like you describe.

Start the engine and have somebody rev it to the range where you hear the
rattle and probe around the front of the valve cover with a hose to see if
the sound is coming from that spot. The fix is to take off the upper chain
cover, remove the top chain guides (NOT the tensioner) and throw them away.

A failing accessory belt tensioner or a chunked up belt also makes a similar
sound (per your question above - the answer is yes).

I experienced all of these things on the same '95 Altima (chain and belt
issues).

So, I would first replace the belts if they look like they need it.  Check
the tensioner and other pulleys while you're at it.  Then if the rattle is
still there, take the hose and check for a rattling chain.

I BET it's the heat shiled for the CAT. IN my 98 Maxima, it developed a
rattle that sounded as if it was deep inside my dash. I was thinking, oh
my god, I will never get rid of that rattle if its in there. Lo and
behold my mechanic was working on my car one day, found the heat shield
loose and fixed it. The noise was GONE.

Thanks for all the help on the rattle.  I haven't heard it today.
Hmmmm....I will check the shield and the belt tensioner.
I've heard what sounds like a brake squeal from the left front wheel.
It is there at most any speed.  Comes and goes.  I looked at the
rotor, it looks fine.  I noticed it first thing this morning pulling
out of my driveway.
While it squeals, I put the car in neutral lightly tap the brakes.
The squeal either stops or sputters, quits, etc...

What would a bearing symptom sound like?  What about a CV joint?

The car has 83,000 miles on it and is the 1997 Altima.
I'm pretty darned happy with the car, and would like to work out the
bugs.  It runs like a scared rabbit and handles great.

Thank you all for the help,

When checking the brakes, check the pads. The pads wear out, and to let
you know, this metal thingy starts to touch the rotor as it's spinning.
That metal thingy touching the rotor is making the squel you're hearing.
It is more commonly called a wear indicator. If continued to be
neglected, the pad will wear to bare metal and start scratching and
permanently damaging the rotor, in which case the brakes pads AND rotor
will need to be replaced.

If a wheel bearing is bad, you will hear a steady hum. To find out
whetther it's the left wheel or right wheel, while on the highway
running at a steady speed, turn left and right. If the humming noise
increases while you're turning right, it's the left wheel bearling and
vice versa.

Thank you for the great advice.

I will pull the wheels tomorrow,
