Help! I just got an old '88 Pathfinder and I don't know anything about
them. I was a mechanic for many years, but stayed away from imports for the
most part. It was cross-firing pretty bad when I got it. I changed the
distributor cap and rotor and it ran about a hundred percent better but
still idled rough and would still cross-fire when under a load. (like when
trying to pick up speed or take off quickly) It already had a new coil. I
replaced the plug wires and that's when it got weird. The miss and the
cross-firing are gone, however now at exactly 3000 RPM's it starts surging
like it has a rev limiter (which it never did before) Is my computer
confused due to the sudden amount of decreased resistance or what's the
deal. Any ideas? It also won't idle now. Mind you, all I did was change
the plug wires!

Wow, that is an interesting one. A few things come to mind to check
though, hopefully my memory of the 88's isn't too terrible any more...
:-)
First double check that you have the wires routed correctly (I'll
assume you didn't cheap out and actually bough OEM Nissan wires which
are pre-numbered, ditto for the cap and rotor quality...).
Check around the coil base and make sure there is no rust/corrosion
anywhere that might be robbing a good ground/connection point.

ckeck to make sure both injectors are working, if one quits it will go
into failsafe.
