Locks itself

My 1997 Nissan Quest has starting -- intermittently -- locking the
doors on it's own.

I'll walk away from the unlocked van and come back later and sometimes
it will have locked itself up. Sometimes all doors, sometimes only a
couple.

I live in the remote woods, no one else around. I've never used the key
fob remote that came with the vehicle.

And the vehicle -- at least from what I can read in the owners manual
-- does not seem to have an "auto lock" function that can be programmed
into the factory installed alarm.

Any thoughts?

Silly question, but do you keep your keys (with the fob) in your pocket when
you leave the car?  I've had mine in my pocket a few times, and been leaning
in the right direction or whatever to set off the alarm... once as I was
crawling under the car!  My forehead will forever have the imprint of my oil
pan thanks to that one.

lol, reminds me of being under the car and my daughter pushing the horn,
whammo, sore head

could be that the battery needs replaced to your fob, its posible its low
and could be sending out a signal on its own because of it. then again if
you never use the fob, remove the battery all together. all of this is
assuming that the keyfob is even close enough to the vehicle when it decides
to go flakey.

It could be that your master switch or the driver switch has an intermittent
contact - mine did that after I left the window open while it rained (if you
don't like the weather in CT, you wait a minute - weather changes quickly
here).

If it happens frequently, see if you can disconnect the switch panel's
connector:  first try the passenger door switch, see if it goes away. If
not, try disconnecting the driver's side switch.
(it often pops out easily if you put a flat screwdriver under the side
towards the font of the car)

I'm on my 2nd 96 Nissan (Quest, now Pathfinder).  When the key fob with
the remote is in my pocket, I am often locking my car when it's in the
garage and I am headed for the house.  Once or twice a week, I come
back to the car to find it locked.  The lock button on the fob is large
and very easily depressed when just walking or reaching your pocket for
your house key. Fortunately the unlock button is small and in my case
does not get accidently pushed.   Good luck

As I mentioned, I've never used the "remote fob." It has never left the
key hook in the house. And since this happens not only at home, but all
over town....

I will look into some of the electrical issues mentioned here.  Nissan
does have TWO TSBs out on this, although my local dealer denies
it....Maybe I'll break down and pay the $20 "access fee" to the TSBs
that Nissan or Alldata demands and see what they have to say....

Before you do that...

Yeah, but that's all they tell at that site. I see that most of the
TSBs there have a link to view the full bulletin, but the two locking
TSBs have the "view document" function grayed-out. :>(

I noticed.  I even tried "guess the URL" on it.  However, the fact that
there *is* such a bulletin is interesting in itself.

Good luck!

just an update.

my mechanic printed off the TSB and gave it to me. A very involved fix.
He said around $350 if he did -- he recommended that i just live with
it...
