my got car is a in the late 1999, and its a 1999 pathfinder, it says so on
the manual and the vin number, but when i try to look for parts, all the
parts are either from pathfinder 96-98, then the 99-2004, but my car looks
more closely to the 96-98. whats the deal? i know i should get the one from
the 96-98,
my rear tail lights, (I think thats what its called, the one that has the
blinker) crack so i need to replace it and i was looking at the tail lights
and seem that the 99-04 tail lights look better, i was wondering if i can
get those tail lights, will it work for my pathfinder? or is it really so
different, i mean they look similar enought that there shouldnt be any
problem.

Nissan usually changes the production year between 5th-7th month of
the year but this varies from year to year and plant to plant. check
the production date on the label in the drivers door jamb if the date
is between 6/98 and 5/99 it most likely is 99 but if it is older than
6/98 it probably is 98 but someone put the wrong manual in it. this
often happens with vehicles that have been sitting on the lot for a
while before they are sold. call your local dealer parts department
give him the VIN# and he can answer you in 10 seconds as to what year
it is.
the lights on the other hand will be a matter of trial and error
unless you can find someone who has actually tried it.

Actually-
Nissan changed the Pathy mid year 1999. The early 1999 models looked
like the 96-98 models.
The newer or later 99's were actually known as 99.5(actually even some
car value guides list it this way as well). Mine was built in Feb of
1999, and is the newer model- looking like the 2000 and up to 2004
models.
The 99.5 models had redesigned Tailights, tailgates, slightly wider
track, 16" wheels/tires, and relocated shock mounts on rear axle.
Most all else is the same powertrain wise. It was not until 2001 that
the 3.5 liter motor came out.
