Rafio was purchased on eBay so I have no idea if the illumination was
working previously. I had a 94 Altima and had to replace a bulb inside
the radio...or am I confusing the Altima with an Isuzu that I owned at
the same time? Grrr!

So how good are you with electronics? you can pull it apart and trace
the circuit from the bulbs or LEDs and see what terminal they hook to
at the connector or if it is fed from an internal source. be much
easier to get a schematic though....... oops, brain fart! I just
looked up some info through google. I found 96-97 pathfinder wiring
color code here:
http://www.autotoys.com/New_Tech/Wire_codes/Pathfinder_96-97_wire_colors/pathfin
der_96-97_wire_colors.htm
Nissan used the same format of radios from clarion for several years
during the 90's so this should be the same for that radio. the dimmer
is on the wire that is pink w green tracer now you just need to know
wich terminal that is. got a friend with a nissan of that era? it only
take about 2 minutes to pull those radios!
