Cooling system not circulating. Recent repairs include new rad, new water
pump, new thermostat, machined head and gasket set. Engine had been
overheated prior to repairs, believe to have been caused by this problem.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

how about the condition of the fan clutch (for the cooling fan)?  has anyone
bothered to see if it's any good or not?

Bad or backward thermostat? Take it out just for the heck of it and see?

yes check the thermostat! also was the work done at a Nissan dealer.
many shops overlook the need to purge air out of the cooling system on
Nissans. if you have a large air pocket you will not get proper flow.
you can also do a flow test on the radiator it may be clogged. which
engine do you have and what's the mileage

The work was done by myself as i do this kind of work as a side job.The
engine is a 2.4L 4cyl. with 221000 kms.I bought the truck about 2 months
ago so i dont know all the details about the overheating issue. The engine
runs very nice and does not rattle or smoke, but the problem with the
cooling system has me wondering if the block is cracked in or around the
cylinder causing a compression leak into the system.

That should be easy enough to tell by either pressurizing the cooling
system at the cap with a tester and checking for pressure degradation,
or by pressurizing each cylinder one at time and looking for bubbles in
the radiator. Are you 100% sure the thermostat is facing the correct
direction and it is working? If not, and it's not too hard to remove,
try taking it out just for the hell of it.

Ok do you have a cooling system tester? if you have a leak from a
cylinder this will be easy to find with a pressure guage on the
radiator and watch for an imeadiat rise in pressure from a cold start.
if you do have a leak it would more likely be a head gasket though.

Hi,
Had similar problem with different vehicle. Try replaceing rad cap. The
cap is supposed to vent at a certain pressure. If the cap if defective it
will not allow the system to vent properly when proper pressure is
reached, then it would over heat. Though the rad cap failure is not
common, it does happen more often than people think. Have the same model
89, and the head actually burnt away into the water jacket between
cylinders 2 & 3. This caused the vehicle to burn AF and appeared as though
I was driving a steem engine. I personally have another problem if you
could help.
Thanks
