I have a 02 Xterra that has 80k miles on it. Tonight, I was backing up, put
it in drive (maybe a touch too soon) and felt it slip then stumble. Im
probably not describing it very well and I am certainly not an expert. Was
wondering what this might be and if it needs immediate attention? Any ideas
would be helpful.

How many times have you changed the transmission fluid in 80K miles?

Couple of times. As a follow up, i had a flush of the transmission fluid
done about 6 weeks ago. They didnt do anything with a filter, just flushed
out the old fluid under pressure. Had it done at a local precision tune.

Did they use the correct fluid? Is it full? Could be a controller or
solenoid pack problem as well.
