My Sentra (1994) is making a LOUD droning noise when I drive. The noise
level increases the faster I drive.
My mechanic said that it was a 5th gear problem, and that my generation
Sentras often have such problem. He wants $900 to rebuilt the tranny--he
says a failure
would be "catestrophic".
Does this sound right?
Thanks.

Well then ignore him and just keep driving it until you prove him
wrong!! But in doing so, every time you drive this car, little bits of
metal are clogging small oil passages that lube the needle bearings and
ball bearings throughout your tranny. Then when it does SHATTER TO
PIECES you can buy a $50 used piece of junk and bolt it in. Think of the
money you will save.

Sentra SE-Rs (SR20DE 2 liter motor) had a problem, they would pop out of
gear while you were driving (some after a 100K miles or so, never saw it in
my 93 with 179K miles) I've heard of folks using a bungee cord to hold it
in 5th. I've not heard of a problem with the 1.6 liter motor's 5 speeds.

I had exactly that problem with 1.6 liter motor's 5 speeds.
It started to happen around 87000 miles and I could still hold
5th to drive but when I hit 100000 the 5th become unusable.
The car still has 4 working gears + reverse, so - no problem... ;-)

Catastrophic would be to pay $900 for fixing an old car like this... :-)
I have 1994 sentra and I lost my 5th gear about a year ago.
It was slipping out of gear occasionally - at first.
Then it could not stay at 5th at all and I had to keep it there,
holding the shifter. Now, even holding the shifter there does not help.
The 5th gear simply does not work at all. Guess what - I do not care.
I just drive using 1, 2, 3 and 4. It is little louder and burns
a little more fuel, but the car is not worth the $900 tranny rebuild...
I could probably find a replacement transmission on the junkyard,
but most likely it would have the same 5th gear problem - very popular
with these sentra models.

Thanks to everybody but dumbass Randy.
I'll just run it until it dies.
