2000 sentra shifter button sticking

This has been a pain.I've tried lubricating and have not been able to free
it up.Can anyone help?

It might be sticking at the bottom, down under the trim plate.  Have you
spilled anything in there?

If it won't press in, it could be the interlock mechanism that prevents it
from being taken out of park when the engine is not running.  There is a
mechanical cable that comes from the ignition switch and an electrical
connection that comes off the stop light switch (on the brake pedal).  If
either of these are malfunctioning, the button won't push.
