Micra Starting Problem

My 2002 Nissan Micra has developed a starting problem, I've had the
battery checked and been told that it is fine. The car is very
difficult to start from cold. When I rotate the key to the "on"
position the dash lights do not always come on and under these
circumstances the thing is completely dead. If I rotate key back to
"lock" and the back to "on" I sometime hear a click from under the
dash (sounds like a relay) and dash lights come on and the car will
start but with great difficulty and I can hear the relay clicking
whilst the starter motor is turning. Once the engine is warm I do not
have any of these problems and it starts first time.

When I had the battery check done the voltage was 12.77 volts with the
engine stopped and 14.83 volts with it running.

Any suggestions as to what could be wrong?

John, see my posts a few below yours in the group. The solution by codifus
works for me. I can't see why this is not mentioned in the handbook.
